The primary goal is to make healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet, eating a lower-calorie diet, and being more physically active.
These changes provide the best start. Normally, a doctor may recommend changes that lead to weight loss or other treatment options. These include medical devices, weight-loss medications, or weight-loss surgery, but these options may vary depending on a person's health needs (Horn, Almandoz and Look, 2022). Those approaches are supported by leading health organisations and are dedicated to helping people achieve long-lasting and safe weight loss.
Calorie in vs Calorie out
Obesity is one of the biggest health issues around the world, and many people are affected. There are about 5% of children and 12% of adults around the world who are living with obesity. The number continues to rise, and it has doubled since 1980 (Howell and Kones, 2017).
Therefore, scientists indicate that one of the main causes of obesity remains unchanged: an imbalance between the calories our bodies burn and the calories we eat.
Understanding Calories
It is a unit of energy that our bodies consume from food to perform every function, such as breathing, walking, working, exercising and keeping the heart beating.
The concept of calories in versus calories out is a better way to understand weight loss and weight gain. There is a simple way to understand weight loss and weight gain through the idea of calories in versus calories out. This is how it is summarised:
- Calories in are the calories you get from drinks and food consumption.
- Calories out are the calories your body usually uses every day.
If people consume more calories than the body burns, the extra energy is stored as body fat; it may lead to weight gain. Conversely, if you burn more calories than you consume, the body uses stored fat energy; this method may result in weight loss.
How Can the Body Burn Calories?
The body can burn calories in three main ways:
1. (REE) Resting Energy Expenditure
In this case, the body requires energy to stay alive while you are resting. This supports different functions such as blood circulation, breathing, brain activity and maintaining body temperature. When the body rests, energy expenditure accounts for around 60-70% of calories. People with physical activity, such as those with more muscle, usually burn more calories at rest than those with less muscle.
2. Physical Activity
This method includes everything from everyday movements, such as climbing stairs, walking, and household activities, to planned activities like running, gym, and cycling.
3. The Energy Used to Digest Food
Your body may also burn calories while digesting, absorbing, and processing the food you eat. This method is known as the thermic effect of food (TEF) and usually accounts for about 10% of the calories you consume.
Understanding how calories work and how your body uses energy may help you make healthier choices and also manage your weight more effectively over time (Howell and Kones, 2017).
Exercise and Weight Management
Regular physical activities are important parts of a successful method for managing obesity and overweight. Exercise such as aerobic activities including cycling, walking, swimming or jogging may help people to lose weight, compared with relying only on diet.
According to a weight management researcher, regular aerobic exercise may result in 2-3 kg of weight loss (Oppert, Ciangura and Bellicha, 2023).
One of the most important advantages of exercise is its effect on visceral fat, which is located deep inside the abdomen around organs. Losing or reducing this type of fat may result in improvements in metabolic and cardiovascular health for people living with obesity.
Researchers suggest that regular physical activity may be particularly helpful in preventing weight regain. Furthermore, the exercises should not be viewed as a tool to lose weight but for reducing abdominal fat and improve health for long-term weight management.
Conclusion
Weight loss is often seen as a simple matter of exercising more and eating less, but in fact it is influenced by many different factors. Physical activity, sleep, stress, hormones, food choices, daily habits, and our environment may all affect our ability to maintain a healthy weight and to lose weight.
One of the most important aspects is that no single solution works for everyone. Stress and sleep should not be ignored. Poor sleep may increase cravings and hunger, and stress can also encourage emotional eating, which makes it harder to follow healthy habits.
